Why we built the SAFE Initiative
Rhode Island's educators are facing a student mental health crisis that predates the pandemic, and has only intensified since. Teachers and counselors tell us the same things in almost every school we visit: students are struggling in ways that show up as behavioral disruption, withdrawal, and conflict. Adults on the frontline don't always have the language, the training, or the tools to respond effectively.
That gap is what the SAFE Initiative was built to close.
SAFE stands for Support, Awareness, Family, Empowerment. It's a structured, multi-component program developed by Brightside Behavioral Health that brings clinical expertise directly into the school environment, through professional development, student workshops, family engagement, and an AI-supported toolkit for educators.
What's included in the pilot
The SAFE Initiative has four connected components:
Trauma-Informed Professional Development. A three-hour workshop for teachers, counselors, and administrators that translates clinical concepts into practical classroom strategies. Educators leave knowing how to recognize trauma responses, de-escalate, and make appropriate referrals.
Student Resilience Workshops and Peer Support. Age-appropriate sessions that teach students to identify and name their own stress responses, build coping strategies, and practice peer support. These are facilitated by our clinical team alongside school staff.
SAFEin: AI-Supported Guidance for Educators. A private, educator-only tool that helps school staff navigate behavioral situations in real time. An educator describes what they're observing (without naming students), and the system returns clinically-grounded guidance, draft family communications, and referral pathways. No student data is ever collected. Privacy is a design principle, not an afterthought.
Family Supports and Referral Pathways. We connect families to Brightside's clinical services and Rhode Island's broader behavioral health network. This isn't a marketing pipeline; it's a genuine effort to ensure that students who need ongoing support can access it.
Who can participate
The SAFE Initiative pilot is open to Rhode Island school districts. Participation is fully grant-funded. There are no fees, no procurement process, and no cost to participating schools.
We're currently enrolling districts for the 2026–27 school year. Priority will be given to schools with existing mental health concerns and counselor capacity to partner with our team.
What we need from you
Surprisingly little. We need:
- A named point of contact (typically a counselor or assistant principal)
- Scheduling support for the professional development session and student workshops
- Staff availability for the three-hour training
We handle curriculum, facilitation, materials, and follow-up. You focus on your students.
How to get started
